There are various rules for students in Monol. When students break these rules, there are corresponding penalties to the violations. The school’s penalties are divided into two categories: regular and special penalties. For students who receive normal or regular penalties, they are still permitted to go out of school. However, there is a huge difference of consequence when it comes to special penalties.
EOP (English Only Policy)
The English Only Policy means that the students must strictly only speak English and not any other language. This policy is implemented to help students practice English as well as get more comfortable using the language.
If a student is caught breaking the EOP, the penalty depends on the area where they broke the rules. These include classrooms, rooms, dining area, office, etc.
Naturally, students have curfews and specific times when they are allowed to go out. Here is the time schedule when they are free to go out to explore the city:
- Monday to Thursday– 5:00 PM (17:00) to 9:00 PM (21:00)
- Friday– 5:00 PM (17:00) to 12:00 AM (24:00)
- Saturday– 5:00 AM (5:00) to 12:00 AM (24:00)
- Sunday– 5:00 AM (5:00) to 9:00 PM (21:00)
Absences and Tardiness
When students are absent, it is equivalent to one hour of penalty for every hour of absence. If they are more than 15 minutes late, they are already considered absent for their class. Meanwhile, once a student has three cumulative late arrivals, it will be counted as one absence.
If students are caught bringing alcohol inside the school, they will be given a 32-hour special penalty and will be prohibited from going out for two weeks.
The things I mentioned above are the different rules and penalties of the school. Of course, if students break the rules they will face penalties as consequences. Students can lessen penalty hours through weekend self-study.
Monol self-study hours and rules
Self-study is scheduled from 9:00 PM (21:00) to 12:00 AM (24:00) on Fridays and Saturdays. For Sunday, it is 8:00 AM (8:00) till 5:00 PM (17:00). Students should apply in advance for self-study so that the office can properly monitor it.
In the situation where a student needs to go out even if they have a special penalty, he or she needs to go to the office to ask for permission. Once they allow the student, he or she will be given a Monol leave pass to give to the security office.
Monol penalty party
In the end, if students cannot fully cut their penalty time through self-study in time for graduation then they have to pay a fine. The accumulated fines from penalties are used to buy food for the students in the so-called Monol penalty party.
Penalty parties are a time for students and freshmen to come together and eat pizza and chicken. Usually, these notices are posted in the dining area on Monday when the new term starts. So, please check them out and enjoy the activity.
Personally, this is my favorite time. We get to enjoy good food and I can make a lot of new friends. My purpose in coming here is to study and enjoy my time with a lot of people.
When it comes to the rules of the school, I think these penalties are a natural part of student life. I appreciate EOP a lot because I sometimes tend to speak Korean without knowing when it is hard to express in English.
The checkers and teachers who impose the rules will check us from time to time and talk to us in English. Thanks to this, I feel that my English is improving little by little.
Let do our best in learning English together!
